MY HORSE
I hear this all the time at clinics, barrel races, horse shows and even in practice. You know, the regular excuse. I use to say this when I was a kid until one day my mom said "No, It is not the horse, it is you." My mom pointed out what I did to cause MY HORSE to mess up. So I started paying more attention to my riding and balance.
What was I doing to cause MY HORSE to mess up?
Dropping my hand
Looking down or the wrong place
Leaning in or out
Riding lazy with no energy
That is a few things to think about. The biggest thing I hear about horses is no rate or anticipating the turn. Well, what are you doing to cause it. At my clinics I really work on the rider being aware of their body position to help their horse have better body position. Now, I know horses have their bad days and they are going to be off sometimes. But all in all, they do what we tell them. So next time you think MY HORSE review your run mentally and I bet you will feel where you messed up. This made me become a better rider and barrel racer and I still work on it everyday with every horse. We will be doing some conformation articles the next few months to help you understand why your horse gets sore and why they can't work when something is out of balance. Good luck and be sure you think about your horse first.
